How to Choose the Right Box

1. Measure the assembled container, not the bottle body. A 30 ml tincture bottle measures about 1.25 inches across but stands over 4 inches tall once the dropper assembly is on. Size the cavity to the capped height and allow roughly a sixteenth of an inch of play, so the bottle slides in smoothly without shifting in transit.
2. Let product weight set the board. For glass, specify 18pt SBS at minimum. Wrap a 4 oz jar in 14pt board and the panels start bowing before the product ever reaches a shelf. Lighter items like pre-roll tubes ride comfortably in 14pt to 16pt.
3. Pick the style for the sales channel. Reverse tuck cartons are quick to load for retail shelving. Auto-lock bottoms carry heavier jars without tape. Display boxes work the counter. E-flute mailers protect ecommerce orders.
4. Block out the compliance panel before design starts. Batch number, QR code, THC statement, and any state warning text need committed space at a legible size. Squeezing them in after the artwork is finished is where most CBD box designs go back for another round.

That last one is the big lever. A 2 x 2 x 4 inch tuck-end carton in 18pt SBS with matte lamination costs meaningfully more per unit at 100 pieces than at 1,000, because the die and plate setup is identical for both runs.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Sizing the box to the bottle body. The dropper assembly adds more than an inch of height on a standard tincture bottle. Boxes sized to the glass alone come back as remakes.

Printing the COA QR code too small or over dark art. Below 0.75 inches, or placed on a foil panel or heavy flood, scan rates drop hard. Give the code white space and contrast.

Making broad green claims on the carton. A vague sustainability slogan is a regulatory liability. Print what is verifiably true, name the substrate and state its actual recyclability, and the claim protects your brand instead of exposing it.

Selecting board on cost alone. The lowest bid is usually the lightest caliper. For glass, the money saved on thin board gets spent on crushed corners and returns.

Leaving no room for state-mandated text. Several states set minimum type sizes for warning statements. Designs that ignore this get rebuilt after legal review, on your timeline.

Ordering a full-scale run before the shelf test. The temptation is to chase the lowest per-unit price on day one. Run 100 to 500 first, confirm fit and sell-through, then commit volume.
