Why Bonbon Packaging Needs Is Special
Bonbons are not like chocolate bars or truffles. These are filled chocolates with thin shells and often elaborate decorations painted or piped on top. They are fragile, temperature-sensitive, and honestly kind of a pain to package properly. But that's also why they command premium prices.
The shells crack easily if anything presses on them. Decorations smudge if bonbons touch each other or the box lid. Fillings soften or harden depending on temperature. Good packaging solves all these problems while making your product look as expensive as it actually is.
We started doing chocolate packaging back in 2015. Over the years you learn what works and what causes problems. Boxes too shallow and the lid presses on decorations. Inserts with loose-fitting cavities let bonbons slide around and chip. Wrong paperboard thickness and boxes feel cheap even though the chocolate inside is premium. Getting these details right matters more for bonbons than almost any other chocolate product.
The Inserts That Will Actually Protect Your Chocolates
The insert is honestly more important than the box itself for bonbons. This is what keeps each piece separated and secure.
Chocolate box inserts come in different materials depending on your needs and budget. Molded plastic inserts are durable and customers can reuse the whole box for storage later. They are also see-through which looks nice for display purposes. The negative thing is they are the most expensive option per unit.
Paper pulp inserts cost less and work well for one-time gift packaging. They have that natural fiber look that fits eco-friendly branding. Not as durable as plastic but perfectly fine when customers are opening the box once to eat the chocolates. These also cushion impacts better during shipping.
Cardboard inserts with die-cut cavities are the budget-friendly choice. Simple cardboard sheets with holes cut to hold each bonbon. Less fancy but functional. Works fine when You are focused on keeping costs down while still providing basic protection.
Custom insert design is where things get interesting. Tell us your bonbon dimensions and we'll create inserts that fit them perfectly. Too loose and they rattle around. Too tight and you can not place them without forcing and risking damage. Getting that fit exactly right takes some trial and error which is why working with experienced packaging people helps.
Rigid Chocolate Boxes Vs Folding Boxes
You've got two main construction styles to choose from. Each works better for different situations.
- Rigid chocolate boxes are what you see in high-end chocolate shops. Two-piece construction with a separate lid and base. The thick chipboard base wrapped in printed paper just screams luxury. These cost significantly more than folding boxes. But for premium bonbons where you are charging $3 to $5 per piece, the packaging needs to match that positioning. Customers keep rigid boxes long after eating the chocolate. They become jewelry boxes, desk organizers, gift boxes for other stuff.
- Folding boxes arrive flat and fold into shape when you need them. Way cheaper per unit and they take up way less storage space. A case of 500 flat folding boxes stacks in maybe a cubic foot. Rigid boxes need ten times that space even put together.

We can adjust box sizing to fit your specific products rather than forcing you to change your chocolate designs to fit standard packaging.
Measure your tallest bonbon including any decoration on top, then add about half an inch clearance to the lid. That prevents damage while not looking oversized.
Custom Printing for Luxury Products
Bonbons are premium products. Your packaging needs to communicate that immediately or customers question why you are charging luxury prices.
- Full-color printing lets you do sophisticated designs. Product photos showing your actual bonbons. Elegant patterns. Your logo and branding in exact brand colors. This isn't the place to cheap out with simple one-color printing. Bonbon customers expect visual refinement.
- Spot UV creates contrast by adding glossy elements on specific areas over matte backgrounds. Maybe your logo gets the gloss treatment while the rest stays matte. This technique adds visual interest without going overboard.
- Foil stamping in gold or silver elevates perceived value significantly. Metallic accents catch light and immediately signal a premium product. Rose gold has become really popular lately for chocolate packaging. It photographs beautifully and feels special without being overly traditional.
Empty Chocolate Boxes for Flexibility
Some chocolatiers prefer ordering empty boxes separately from inserts. Gives you flexibility to use the same box size with different insert configurations. Maybe you do 9-piece, 12-piece, and 16-piece assortments in similar sized boxes. One box style, different inserts.
Empty chocolate boxes arriving flat-packed take up minimal storage. You can keep larger inventory without dedicated warehouse space. Inserts often nest inside empty boxes for even more space efficiency.
Why Companies Choose To Work With Us
Small batch production is literally what we are set up for. Chocolatiers can not order packaging like industrial candy companies do. You are making limited quantities, testing flavors, doing seasonal offerings. No minimum orders mean you get exactly what you need right now. Order what makes sense without storing thousands of boxes you will not use for six months.
Food-grade materials and FDA-compliant inks are not negotiable when packaging touches food people eat. Everything we use meets requirements.
